Cutting perfect latex strips!

About this Quick Tip...

After watching this video, you'll never have to panic again when latex strips are sold out. Because from now on, you'll simply make them yourself!

They provide a professional finish, making your homemade garment look neat. And it gives the garment more strength.

Latex can tear, especially in areas that experience a lot of "stress" such as seams, sleeves, crotch, armpits or waistband, etc. Latex strips are perfect for quick repairs.

Strips can also be used purely decoratively. Think of contrasting colors along the edges of a latex dress, or geometric patterns created with strips. They add a professional, industrial look to any design.

What you'll need:

  • One or more old cutting mats (or their back)
  • Tape to attach the mats together
  • A long ruler (or anything else long and straight)
  • A rotary cutter with a new sharp blade (45 or 60 mm)
  • Paper tape
  • A pen
  • Spray adhesive (any brand is fine)
  • Latex

Why cut your own latex strips, and not just buy them?

Cost savings Pre-cut latex strips can be quite expensive, especially if you need them in large quantities. By making them yourself from larger latex material, you can significantly save on material costs.

CustomizationCommercial strips often come in standard widths and lengths. By making them yourself, you can create the exact dimensions your project requires - from super thin strips for delicate work to wide bands for structural support. And with a rotary cutter with a wavy or serrated blade, you can make the most fun strips!

Material control You can determine the quality and thickness of the latex you use. Different applications require different properties - thinner material for flexible connections, thicker material for sturdy constructions.

Color consistencyBy cutting strips from the same latex as your main project, you guarantee a perfect color match. This is especially important for projects where the strips are visible.

Availability Nothing is more frustrating than discovering halfway through a project that your specific strips are sold out. By making your own supply, you are always prepared.

The quality of homemade strips: With the right technique and tools, homemade latex strips can be as good as, or even better than, commercial alternatives. The key is to use a sharp rotary cutter (always use a new blade - 45 or 60 mm diameter) and a stable, clean cutting mat. This ensures straight, smooth edges without fraying or irregularities that could affect quality.

Tips!

  • Storage: Store cut strips with some talcum powder between them to prevent sticking.
  • Planning: Always cut some extra strips - it's better to have too many than too few!
